Saint Francis of Assisi ParishReligious EducationCurriculum Grades 6-8 Grade 6 –The Bible and Old Testament During this year students will learn more deeply how to use the bible as a resource, to look up scriptures, and to study in depth the stories of the Old Testament and God’s Covenant with His people. We will also explore Church teachings and traditions regarding the types of scripture, how to read it, when it is used, and its origins. Parents are asked to help by looking up scripture verses and helping your child copy them into a journal that can be brought to each class. (A list of verse references will be provided). Prayer: Please practice praying the psalms – simply read them with your child – taking turns reading the verses or sections. Then take time to offer petitions for the different people in your life who need prayer. Keep track of your prayer intentions in the journal and look back to see when your prayers are answered. (A list of psalms will be provided for your convenience).
Grade 7 – Jesus and the New Testament During this year students will spend time learning about the life of Christ, and especially our relationship with Him. We will study the stories Jesus told, his teachings, and the new covenant he brought to us. In addition to the life of Christ, we will also study Catholic teachings regarding the Eucharist, the celebration of Mass, prayer traditions, and the early church. Parents are asked to help by looking up and reading parables with your children. Together write a summary of the story and the lesson Jesus was teaching in a journal to be brought to each class. (A list of parable references will be provided). Prayer: The Rosary – there are 4 sets of mysteries, and 5 decades in each mystery. This is a total of 20 decades – perfect for a once a week decade. Please work with your child to learn this important prayer of the Catholic Church. At the beginning of the year students will make a one-decade rosary that will be perfect for this time with you! (A “How-to-Pray” the rosary pamphlet will be provided). Keep a list of your prayer intentions in a journal so that you will be able to see how God answers our prayers.
Grade 8 – Morality During this year students will learn the various teachings of the Bible, the Catechism, and church tradition regarding our moral lives and decisions. In particular we will study how events in the history of the Church have affected our traditions and beliefs. We will develop our moral compass, and discover how to live as a responsible Catholic. Parents are asked to help by having your child write in their own words the Beattitudes, 10 Commandments, Moral and Theological Virtues, and the Precepts of the Church. (These will be provided to you for your discussions). Prayer: Please practice the Nicene Creed, the Act of Contrition, and the Acts of Faith, Hope, and Love with your child every week. (Copies of these and a suggested prayer schedule will be provided). Also keep a prayer list of your intentions so that you can look back and see how God does answer our prayers.
